Job Description:

As part of the Essential Oil Blend Development team within the Research and Development Department, the Associate Development Scientist will ideate, formulate, test, and document essential oil blends for use in personal care, home care, and nutrition products through a combination of laboratory and computer-based work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Formulates functional essential oil blends and natural, essential oil-based fragrances (no isolates or synthetics) for use in aromatic, cosmetic, personal care, home care, and nutrition product applications.
  • Ideates new essential oil blends to contribute to doTERRA product offerings.
  • Leads analysis and updates of existing essential oil blends.
  • Becomes an expert in the usage and benefits of essential oils for cosmetic, household cleaning, and/or nutrition applications.
  • Builds samples of essential oil blends in the laboratory using scale and pipettes.
  • Maintains a clean and well-organized laboratory environment with proper raw material storage and labeling.
  • Designs and conducts the sensory evaluation of essential oil blends.
  • Designs and conducts in vitro and clinical efficacy testing of essential oil blends.
  • Conducts stability testing of essential oil blends.
  • Submits essential oil blend samples to various departments for sensory evaluation, chemical analysis (including GCMS, LCMS, specific gravity, optical rotation, refractive index, flash point), safety testing (including HRIPT), manufacturing pilot trials, and product registration.
  • Maintains detailed formulation and batch records using an Excel-based laboratory notebook in Microsoft Sharepoint.
  • Becomes an expert in aromatic descriptors, physical appearance, chemical profile, solubility, stability, safety, usage, and benefits of various raw materials, including essential oils, concretes, absolutes, CO2 extracts, and vegetable oil.
  • Builds, reviews, updates, and approves product specifications for essential oil blends using organoleptic and chemical laboratory results, leveraging input from the QC laboratory and other teams.
  • Drafts, reviews, and approves product documentation, including product formulas, product information pages (PIPs), labels, composition statements, etc, in collaboration with Regulatory and Marketing Departments.
  • Analyzes and writes project reports and PowerPoints for internal and external presentations.
  • Tracks project progress through coordination with multiple departments.
  • Contributes to improving Essential Oil Development processes and workflows through cross-departmental meetings and writing of SOPs.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, food science, or related field
  • At least 1-year laboratory experience is required, with proficient use of an analytical balance and pipettes.
  • Ability to smell and taste essential oils.
  • Excellent math skills, including the ability to calculate dilutions and percentages.
  • Strong interest in the evaluation of natural aromatic raw materials
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and work independently while juggling multiple tasks.
  • Proficient use of MS Office, especially Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to be creative.
  • Knowledge of common analytical testing techniques such as GC-MS and HPLC is preferred.
