Job Description:

As part of the Essential Oil Blend Development team within the Research and Development Department, the Associate Development Scientist will formulate, evaluate, test and document essential oil blends for use in personal care (cosmetic) and home care (household cleaning) applications through a combination of laboratory and computer-based work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Builds essential oil blends that are safe, effective, compliant and appealing for aromatic and topical use, as well as oil blends to serve as fragrance and functional ingredients in personal care and home care formulations.
    • Builds samples of essential oil blends in the laboratory using scale and pipettes. Accurately weighs raw materials in the proper sequence utilizing an electronic scale and disposable pipettes.
    • Maintains a clean and well-organized laboratory environment with proper raw material storage and labeling.
    • Maintains detailed formulation and batch records using Excel-based laboratory notebook in Microsoft Sharepoint.
    • Submits essential oil blend samples to various departments for organoleptic evaluation, chemical and physical analysis (including GCMS, LCMS, specific gravity, optical rotation, refractive index, flash point), safety testing (including HRIPT), solubility testing, manufacturing pilot trials, and product registration.
    • Designs, conducts and reports results of formal sensory evaluation trials of essential oil blends.
    • Designs, conducts and reports results of in vitro and clinical efficacy testing of essential oil blends in partnership with university, research organizations and doTERRA’s Clinical Research Team.
    • Conducts and tracks results of open package stability testing of essential oil blends.
  • Coordinates with Development Scientists, Perfumer, Regulatory, Sourcing and Marketing departments to create and conduct detailed review of product documentation including product formulas and product labels for safety, efficacy, and compliance.
    • Builds, reviews, updates, and approves raw material specifications for essential oil blends and other types of raw materials using organoleptic, physical and chemical laboratory results, leveraging input from the QC laboratory and other teams.
    • Drafts, reviews and approves documentation associated with essential oil blend and associated raw materials (including supplier documents, product formulas, product information pages (PIPs), labels, composition statements, etc) in collaboration with Sourcing, Regulatory and Product Management Departments.
  • Researches and ideates new raw materials to contribute to doTERRA product offerings in aromatic, cosmetic, personal care, and home care applications.
    • Becomes an expert in the cleansing properties (antimicrobial activities) and skin and hair care benefits (anti-aging, moisturization, etc) of essential oils.
    • Becomes an expert in aromatic descriptors, physical appearance, chemical profile, solubility, stability, safety, usage and benefits of a variety of raw materials, including essential oils, concretes, absolutes, CO2 extracts, and vegetable oil.
  • Analyzes data and writes project reports and PowerPoints for internal and external presentation.
  • Tracks project progress through coordination with multiple departments.
  • Contributes to improvement of Essential Oil Development processes and workflows through cross-departmental meetings and writing of SOPs.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or related field
  • At least 1 year laboratory experience required, with proficient use of an analytical balance and pipettes.
  • Familiarity with and passion for natural cosmetics, personal care and household cleaning products.
  • Ability to smell, taste and topically apply essential oils.
  • Excellent math skills, including ability to calculate dilutions and percentages.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and work independently while juggling multiple tasks.
  • Proficient use of MS Office, especially Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook
  • Ability to be creative.
  • Knowledge of common analytical testing techniques such as GC-MS and HPLC preferred.
